Winter Risk Prevention Tips

Getting your home winter ready:

Service your furnace and boiler systems and be sure to clear your furnace vent of ice and snow.

Clean your chimney and flue. Regular cleaning will help prevent chimney fires.

Remove debris from eavestroughs and downspouts to help prevent water damage to your home and avoid nesting areas for insects or birds.

Extend downspouts away from your foundation by three feet. This will allow proper drainage of water away from your foundation.

Trim branches near the roof line as they could become weighted down with ice or snow during the winter and fall on your home or your neighbour's property.

Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. They should be placed on every level of your home and near the bedrooms.

Use "snap-on" interior insulation sleeves for pipes to protect them from freezing and causing them to burst. Remember to drain your outside faucets as winter temperatures can freeze the water that is trapped inside.

Tips to keep you safe on winter road:

Remember to invest in quality winter tires. They are designed to perform well in cold and icy conditions, giving you better control on the road.

Pack an emergency kit to be left in your car. The kit should include a blanket, flashlight, shovel, booster cables, flares, windshield washer fluid, and non-perishable snacks.

Take your car in for maintenance. Make sure the technician checks your brakes, windshield wipers and your battery.

Keep your gas tank full to prevent your gas lines from freezing.

Be mindful of the weather conditions. If the driving conditions are poor and you don't need to be on the road, it's best to stay indoors.
